Storm players celebrate with the JJ Giltinan Shield following their win over the Sharks.

The Storm and Sharks' showdown for the NRL minor premiership came to a head at AAMI Park. After withstanding Cronulla's best efforts, Melbourne ended up blowing their opponents out of the water and clinching the J.J. Giltinan Shield. As a result of Cronulla's loss, the Raiders huge win over the Wests Tigers – on a day where Leichhardt Oval said goodbye to Robbie Farah – saw the green machine jump the Sharks into second place on the NRL Telstra Premiership ladder. Newcastle's dire 2016 season came to a close in controversial circumstances when the Dragons beat them at the death, in a game where the Captain's Challenge was trialled. The Eels ended their season on the best note possible in New Zealand while the Broncos, Cowboys and Panthers headed into Week One of the finals with a win under their belts.
