2018 Origin opener tickets on sale

Tickets for game one of the 2018 Holden State of Origin Series will go on sale to the public tomorrow (Thursday 20 July).

The opening match will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), with fans able to purchase tickets to the biggest sporting event in Australia from as little as $35 and family passes from as little as $125.

NRL Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Abdo said the decision to release tickets on sale now for the first Origin next year was due to the incredible number of fans who took in all the action of this year’s Series live across the three matches and on TV.

Significant demand for tickets from interstate travellers who attended the previous time the MCG hosted an Origin match in 2015 also factored into the decision to provide plenty of time for fans to plan their trip.

“The 2017 Holden State of Origin Series was viewed by more than 10 million people on television, with game three attracting the highest television audience of the year so far, as well as a ground record crowd at Suncorp Stadium,” Mr Abdo said.

“The MCG packed out when Origin was last played in Melbourne two years ago and with so much enthusiasm and tribalism across the series, we want to make sure fans are able to make their plans early by securing tickets – especially those fans who will travel to support their team live at one of Australia’s most iconic sporting grounds.”

A pre-match spectacular will once again take place at the MCG, with game one taking place on Wednesday night, 6 June.

“We will be taking full advantage of another night-time Origin in Melbourne and fans can expect to witness plenty of action at the ground before a ball is kicked,” Mr Abdo said.

Chief Executive Officer of Visit Victoria, Peter Bingeman said he welcomed the opportunity for Melbourne to host a State of Origin match once again.

“Melbourne has a track record of hosting some of the biggest sporting events in Australia and the world and I have no doubt that we will fill the MCG again for what will be another Origin blockbuster,” Mr Bingeman said.

“We look forward to welcoming travelling fans to the match and to stay in our beautiful city, along with our local rugby league fans who follow the Storm and the many Queensland players in the team.”

Early bird tickets for game one of the 2018 Origin Series will be on sale from 10:00am tomorrow morning (Thursday) to the public.
