The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs move back to Belmore has received a significant funding boost courtesy of the NSW State Government.
NSW Premier Kristina Keneally MP today announced a $2.5million grant for the upgrade of Belmore Sports Ground.
“This $2.5 million grant will be used to upgrade the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs’ home turf at Belmore Sports Ground and will bring major benefits to the game and local community,” Ms Keneally said.
“The redevelopment will give the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs new facilities for a permanent training base as well as creating new opportunities for other users.
“This funding will give local community organisations, clubs and sporting teams’ access to contemporary facilities at Belmore Sports Ground.”
The grant comes on top of $4.9million in Federal Government funding received in May 2010 as part of its Regional Local Community Infrastructure Programme.
Canterbury City Council and the Bulldogs will each contribute $500,000 to the project.
Construction work on the redevelopment of Belmore Sports Ground, including a state-of-the art training and office facility for the use of the Bulldogs, is set to commence in coming months.
Stage one of the project will include a world-class gym with an altitude chamber, a recovery centre with ice baths and hyperbaric chamber, a theatre, a players’ lounge with study facilities and a bunkhouse.
Today’s State Government funding announcement will help make stage two of the project a reality, including an upgrade of the Belmore Sports Ground playing surface to junior representative rugby league, NSW Cup, and possibly NRL trial match level.
“We are extremely fortunate to now have the support of all levels of government in our efforts to bring the Bulldogs back home to Belmore Sports Ground,” said Bulldogs Chairman Mr Ray Dib.
“The Premier is a great supporter of Rugby League and we are extremely grateful to her for helping make the Belmore redevelopment a reality.
“We are moving closer to the day that construction begins, and we know that with the support we have received from the Federal and NSW Governments, along with Canterbury City Council, we are another step closer towards one of the best training facilities in Australian sport.
“In addition, we are another step closer to giving the people of Belmore and the wider Canterbury-Bankstown district a sporting facility of distinction, one they can be proud to have in their back yard.”
The Bulldogs have been operating from Sydney Olympic Park since departing Belmore in 2008 and will continue to be based there until the redevelopment at Belmore is complete.
