With the dust barely settled on his record-breaking try-scoring feats in the Holden Cup, North Queensland Cowboys winger Gideon Mosby has extended his contract with the club until the end of the 2017 season.
Originally from the Torres Strait, Mosby, 18, made his NYC debut this year after arriving in Townsville to attend Kirwan State High School in 2013. He was a previous scholarship holder at the club.
His impact on the under-20s game has been phenomenal this year, with the former Cairns junior having already broken the competition record for tries in a season.
He has scored 31 four-pointers with three regular-season games remaining. Mosby broke and then extended the previous record of 29 – set by Wests Tigers player Juke Mullaney in 2009 – in the Cowboys’ 44-30 Round 23 win over South Sydney at 1300SMILES Stadium.
Tipped to be fighting for a first grade gig in 2016, the Darnley flyer is noted for his blistering pace and nose for the try line, but Cowboys NYC coaching staff have also been impressed with his willingness to run the ball back strongly, his dedication to training and his general attitude in and around the football team.
“Gideon is a fantastic emerging talent and the club is thrilled to have him extend his stay until at least 2017,” Cowboys’ Elite Pathway Program Manager Micheal Luck said.
“His teammates love what he brings each week and for him to break that try-scoring record with several games left in the season is a fabulous effort which shows he’s making the most of his natural gifts.”
Mosby, who attends classes at Kirwan to further his education, said he had loved every minute of debut NYC season, and was pleased to be able to call Townsville and the Cowboys home for at least two more seasons.
“The club has been very supportive of me and I love going out there with the boys each week,” he said.
“We’re having a really good season and to be able to play under (NYC coach) Todd (Payten) and the other coaches has really helped my game.”
The NYC Cowboys are having one of their best seasons under Payten, the team currently second on the NYC ladder with 17 wins, three losses and a draw. They play the sixth-place Warriors at Mt Smart Stadium in Saturday’s Round 24 clash.
