Cronulla prop Andrew Fifita is poised to put a disappointing start to the NRL season behind him, starting with Sunday's City-Country clash in Dubbo, says City coach Brad Fittler.

Fifita used the annual representative clash as a launching pad in his breakthrough 2013 season and, despite his axing from the Kangaroos' side, Fittler says Fifita is on the way back to regaining his barnstorming form of last year.

"He has had an interesting start to the season," the former NSW and Australian skipper said.

"He hasn't had the best start to the season but I think his footy has been better over the last month.

"He is getting there so it would be good for our team if he wanted to make a statement on Sunday.

"He is such an energetic bloke and that is the thing about him - he is still being energetic.

"So that is as good a sign as you can ask for now."

Fifita admitted earlier this week his contract problems with Canterbury had affected his form.

He has subsequently committed to the Sharks for four more years, leaving him to solely concentrate on football.

Fittler said Fifita also had to deal with being a marked man following his sensational 2013.

"People do more video on you, they work you out," Fittler said.

"It is up to him to take his game forward."
