TOWERING Cronulla forward Andrew Fifita is no longer the biggest member of the Sharks squad now that brother David has signed on until the end of the season.
Andrew predicts “the sky’s the limit” for his identical twin whom he says could find himself in the blue of NSW within a season.
Andrew, fresh off a two-try, man-of-the-match effort against his former club Wests Tigers, says his brother could develop into one of the game’s best forwards if he stays focused.
“I learnt all my game off him,” Andrew, preparing for Origin III, told Big League of “bigger” brother David (above).
“Once he makes his mark in premier league he’ll make his mark in first grade. You never know, the sky’s the limit for David. He could even be in the NSW Blues by next year or the year after. I believe he can do it and I believe he can play first grade footy. It’s all up to him and he’s got to take it step by step… First grade’s within reach.”
Cronulla and Melbourne battled for David’s services before the Sharks confirmed his signing from France in June, but Andrew said he didn’t need much convincing.
“I didn’t have much to say to him to be honest,” Andrew said. “I did want him to stay but at the end of the day it’s about the best thing for him and his family. I think he chose the right club.
“If he just puts his head on right and knuckles down, he can go anywhere.”
David, who said Andrew’s predictions made him “nervous”, has very attainable goals for the rest of the season, which were simply “to earn that contract for next season and to play alongside [Andrew]”.
Cronulla NSW Cup coach Tony Herman described David’s first outing for the club against Windsor last week as “powerful”, but stressed more game-time, improved match fitness and better support play would be vital to David gaining promotion to the NRL.
