Former Queensland and Australian international Israel Folau has quit the AFL and is heavily tipped to return to the NRL.

Folau spent the last two year at AFL club Greater Western Sydney, but confirmed at a press conference on Thursday that he would be quitting the final two-years of his contract.

It is believed Folau will join his brother John at the Parramatta Eels in 2013.

NRL Interim CEO Shane Mattiske welcomed the announcement today.

“We’re happy for Israel,” Mr Mattiske said.

“This is about people working in the interests of an individual in good faith and letting someone play the game that he is passionate about.

"At its heart that is what sport is about and I’m happy that Israel and the AFL have been able to work to that outcome.”

Parramatta denied they have talked to Folau.
