Matraville Sports High coach Scott Murray has questioned his side’s poor discipline despite the school’s 30-10 victory over Bass High at Redfern Oval.
Matraville led 18-6 at half time and continue on its ways in the second half, but a number of penalties for foul play, melees and push and shoves gave the coach plenty of headaches after the match.
“We probably gave some penalties away that we’re a bit unhappy with but it was always going to be difficult in regards to discipline and I think it was coming from both teams,” said Murray.
“We had a lot on the line to lose and we were trying to get that message out to the kid which is difficult in the heat of the moment but we’d like to think we’ve got some bigger things coming up.
“Not looking too far ahead our number one is against Endeavour in a few weeks and we didn’t want to have anyone sitting out who could’ve played.”
Five-eighth and captain Dylan Walker was named man of the match for the second time in the tournament, and echoed his coach’s thoughts on the needless penalties which were given away.
“The coach wasn’t happy about that [discipline], he told us before the game to have no silly penalties, to keep our discipline and to not be idiots out there,” said the Matraville captain.
“It was a strong performance but it could have been better, we needed a bit more discipline and we’ll need to sit down and talk to all the boys about it.
Matraville opened the match with three converted tries in the opening quarter of an hour with Meehan, Stowers and Walker all crossing to score but Bass were given a glimmer of hope in the final minute of the first half.
Matraville were attacking its opponent’s lines before a wayward pass found Bass centre Derek Toi Toi who ran 80 metres to score and cut the deficit to 12 at the interval.
It was as close Bass came to troubling Matraville, with a late consolation try from the Bass High winger in the final minutes ensuring a 30-10 scoreline.
Matraville now go on to meet Endeavour Sports High after the school holidays with the winner progressing through to the semi finals while Bass High will be playing for pride in its final group stage match against Hunter Sports High.
