Guide to Holden Test Match Fantasy

As we've seen in the past week, picking a rugby league Test team is tough – you've got to consider combinations, form, injury worries and whether to snub Sonny Bill Williams.

On the other hand, picking a Holden Test Match Fantasy team is ridiculously easy – just pick six players and you could win $500 plus two tickets to the 2014 Four Nations Final.

The only restriction when picking your team is positional: you'll need one hooker, one prop, one second-rower, one half, one centre and one fullback/winger. Pick six players from either the Kangaroos or Kiwis teams and if you get the top-scoring combination on Friday night you'll be going to the Four Nations Final at the end of the year, with a chunk of spending money in your pocket.

No salary cap, no trades, no restrictions on how many players you can have from each country, just 80 minutes and the major prize could be yours.

The point scoring works exactly the same as regular Holden NRL Fantasy, but the wildcard up your sleeve is the captaincy and vice captaincy. In Test Match Fantasy, your captain will earn triple points and your vice captain will earn double. So getting these two right will be key.

So, just pick Cameron Smith as captain and fellow workhorse Paul Gallen as vice captain, right? Not so fast. Smith and Gallen may be among the most consistent Fantasy scorers out there, but Test Match Fantasy isn't about consistency. It's about which players will score the most in one single game.

Will Shaun Johnson do all the attacking himself in an under-strength New Zealand team, and rack up a huge score? Will goal-kicking playmaker Johnathan Thurston play the house down? Is Greg Inglis unstoppable right now? Will Darius Boyd or Brett Morris score a hat-trick on the wing?

The key to these one-off Fantasy matches is to take a gamble. If you go along with the pack, you'll finish with the pack. Take a punt on what you think will happen, and pick your team accordingly. If you feel like it, throw the captaincy on Inglis or Thurston or barnstorming Kiwi prop Jesse Bromwich. If you predict a low-scoring arm-wrestle, pick busy defenders like Smith and Gallen. If you think it'll be a try-fest, opt for the Morris brothers. If you think the underdog Kiwis will win, give the captaincy to Johnson.

Go with your gut, don't forget to pick your captains, and tell your mates to pick a team as well. It takes all of 60 seconds so put a team together, and could be the easiest $500 – plus Test match tickets – you've ever earned.
