The Gold Coast Titans have today welcomed back one of the club’s favourite sons, with retired dual international Mat Rogers commencing as the club’s Backs Coach.
The 36-year-old, who retired from rugby league with the Titans in 2010, will take on the newly created role which will see him working closely with the club’s young group of halves such as Jordan Rankin (21), Aidan Sezer (21), Albert Kelly (21) and Beau Henry (22).
The important announcement marks the return of the club’s inaugural inductee into the Gold Coast Titans Hall of Fame and a player who was an integral member of the club during its founding years from 2007 to 2010.
Rogers also returned for a brief playing stint with the Titans in 2011 but a broken foot in his first match back ended his comeback prematurely.
Gold Coast Titans Chief Executive Officer David May said it was exciting to have Rogers returning to the club.
“Mat was an integral part of this club during those important first few years so to have such a professional person returning to the club in a new capacity is fantastic news,’’ said May.
“Given how much influence Mat had as a player in both codes, I’m sure he will be a welcomed contributor to our coaching staff.’’
Gold Coast Titans Head Coach John Cartwright said it was important to have his former five-eighth and centre returning to work with a group of younger players in those specific key positions.
“As a player, Mat had a great skill set and an energy that had a positive impact on his teammates so it’s great that he will be back on board helping some of our younger players in a coaching capacity,’’ said Cartwright.
“He knows what is required to perform at the top level, is familiar with how the club operates and already has a great relationship with many of the players and the coaching staff so it’ll be great to have him involved with the playing group once again.’’
Rogers said he was eager to once again help contribute to the club he played 77 NRL games for from 2007-2011.
“Being involved with the Titans from the start, this club will always hold a special place in my heart,’’ said Rogers.
“So to be returning in a new coaching role in what is an exciting new phase for the club makes it even more special.
“I’m looking forward to working with some of the younger guys and am really excited by the next challenge in my career.’’
