2024 NRL Signings Tracker: Saab inks monster Manly deal; Garner commits to Panthers
Jason Saab will be a Sea Eagles player until at least the end of the 2029 NRL Telstra Premiership season, after adding a further extension to his current contract with the club.
Already committed through until the end of 2026, Saab and Manly have agreed to terms on a new deal which adds a further three years to his stay on the Northern Beaches.
Upon announcing the news, Sea Eagles coach Anthony Seibold said he believes the 23-year-old, who has scored 53 tries in 75 first grade games, is poised to become one of the top wingers in the game.
“The improvement Jason has shown over the last 18 months is significant. I believe he can now become an elite winger and a representative class winger,’’ Seibold said.
“It’s within reach. He has always had the potential.
“We’ve seen ‘Saaby’ score some great tries since he has come into first grade but I think the consistency in his game has grown.
“That’s his biggest area of improvement, he has become a really consistent NRL player and I know he can become an elite winger."
It comes days after the Sea Eagles picked up Jake Simpkin from the Wests Tigers on a deal through to the end of the 2026 season, effective immediately.
The 22-year-old hooker has played 41 NRL games for the Wests Tigers since making his first-grade debut in 2021 and has featured in four first grade matches for the club this season.
It follows first-choice hooker Lachlan Croker suffering a neck injury in Round 9 which the club deemed currently not conducive to a safe return.
Simpkin saves the day
The Panthers have announced the re-signing of backrower Luke Garner for another two seasons.
The premiership winner has committed to the Panthers until at least the end of the 2026 NRL season.
“Ivan Cleary gave me my NRL debut back in the day and then it was special to win a grand final with him last year," Garner said.
“To stick around here for another two years is pretty exciting. It’s great to see where this club is going and I’m looking forward to being a part of it.”
The Cowboys have agreed to terms with prop Coen Hess on a new three-year contract which will keep him in Townsville until the end of the 2027 NRL season.
After making his first-grade debut with the club as a teenager back in 2015, Hess, who will sit out the entire 2024 season after suffering a pre-season ACL injury, is set to enter the Cowboys' top 10 list for appearances next year.
His signing comes after North Queensland also re-committed to prop Tom Mikaele on a new two-year deal, with a further club option for 2027.
Upon announcing the extension of Hess, Cowboys GM of football Micheal Luck said it was pleasing to lock up a local junior and take him a step closer to being a one-club player.
“He has been a huge contributor to this club over a long period of time and is a point of difference for us on the field with the work he churns through as well as his enthusiasm and intensity," Luck said.
“We’re excited to have another North Queensland junior taking another step towards becoming a one-club player.”
Meanwhile, Origin star AJ Brimson will call the Gold Coast home long-term, inking a contract extension to remain a Titan until 2030.
The 26-year-old will remain a one-club player for at least the next six years, having joined the Titans as a 15-year-old and progressing through the pathways to make his NRL debut in 2018.
“The Titans mean quite a bit to me. It’s been my home and my work for the last ten years,” Brimson said.
"I love playing for this club and I love the Gold Coast. I’m also excited for what the future holds. This new deal is good security for me and my family and I’m extremely excited for the next six years."
Penrith have landed a blow in the recruitment market with Kiwi test star Isaiah Papali'i to join the defending premiers from the start of 2025.
The 2021 Dally M Second Rower of the Year was under contract at Wests Tigers until the end of 2025 but will make the move early to the Panthers from next season after he was given permission to negotiate an early release.
“We’re thrilled to have secured Isaiah’s services for the next three seasons,” Panthers Rugby League CEO Matt Cameron said. “Not only does Isaiah bring a wealth of experience and leadership capabilities to our club, but he’s also a world-class forward who has proven himself at the highest level.”
Papali'i joined Wests Tigers from Parramatta in 2021, and will bring up his 150th NRL game later this year having debuted for the Warriors in 2017.
The Storm, meanwhile, have granted Aaron Pene an immediate release to take up an opportunity in Super League.
Pene made his NRL debut late in the 2020 season against the Dragons and played another nine games in 2021 before spending the 2022 season with the Warriors.
He returned to Melbourne at the start of 2023 and played another eight games to take his career tally to 32 NRL games.
“I’ve loved every minute of my time at this club. Every person at some point through my time here has had a positive impact on my football career and in my life outside,” Pene said.
The Dolphins have agreed to terms on a new two-year deal with versatile forward Ray Stone, which will keep him at the NRL newcomers until at least the end of 2026. Since joining the club from the Eels for their inaugural campaign last year, Stone has appeared in 26 matches for coach Wayne Bennett.
The Bulldogs have signed Tom Amone from the Leigh Leopards on a two-year deal commencing in 2025. The 27-year-old previously had stints with the Rabbitohs and Wests Tigers before heading to Leigh in 2022 and playing 63 games across two seasons, including the 2023 Challenge Cup final victory.
