Thousands of school children across New South Wales are set to benefit from a new $100 'Active Kids Rebate' for sporting and fitness related costs, announced yesterday as part of the New South Wales State budget.
Families will be able to claim the rebate from 1 January 2018 on items such as sports registration fees and membership costs.
NRL Head of Football Brian Canavan congratulated the New South Wales Government on its 'Active Kids Rebate' budget announcement.
"The NRL has been working with the Government for a long time looking at ways to remove barriers to participation in sport," Mr Canavan said.
"We are very pleased Minister Ayres and the NSW Government have taken on board the suggestion of creating a sports voucher scheme to help families with the cost of sport.
"The $100 rebate will help get more young people involved in all forms of rugby league, whether it be touch, tag or tackle.
"This kind of saving will mean a lot for rugby league families and we hope it encourages more children to get involved in our sport.
"The sports voucher scheme, when combined with our changes to junior league earlier this year to create a more fun, friendly and free-flowing game, means rugby league has never been more accessible for children.
"We look forward to working with the NSW Government during the community consultation phase as the details of the program are finalised for implementation in 2018."
