If Greg Inglis is the Rabbitohs captain, halfback Adam Reynolds is the side's on-field general, and the 25-year-old says he is going out of his way to help shoulder some of that leadership burden.
Following a week in which Inglis admitted he struggled at first to adapt to the captaincy when it was handed to him this year, Reynolds said the senior players around Inglis needed to do their part.
Speaking after leading Souths to a 24-8 win over the Dragons at the SCG, having laid on the last two tries, Reynolds credited Inglis for helping give him the belief to close out the game.
"'Greggy' got into my ear there and said to finish off the game. To do it on high. It gave me a lot of confidence there to go out and produce those plays," Reynolds said.
"I've been working hard with 'GI' to improve my leadership around the place. When he does it, it does inspire me. Coming from such a household name, and to see what he's done in the game, he backs me. It is my job to do it and I just need to stand up."
With the game on the line late in the contest and the Dragons having closed the gap to four points with 10 minutes to go via a try to Josh Dugan, Inglis produced the play of the match to somehow run the ball out of his own in-goal, beating several players and averting a line drop out as well as earning a crucial penalty to put his team on the attack.
It was during that penalty kick for touch that Inglis had a word to his halfback.
"We knew we just had to camp down their end and build some pressure. Eventually it would've come and that's what we did," Reynolds said.
Of Inglis's comments earlier in the week about adapting to captaincy, Reynolds said other players in the team also needed to stand up and help out in terms of leadership.
"And that's what I aim to do," he said.
"I'm the general on the field and I need to call the shots. That's something that we spoke about in the week off. I thought tonight [we] executed the plan nicely."
Reynolds said with the Rabbitohs finally having forced their way into the top four after a bit of a mid-season slump they would be aiming to stay there.
"As you've seen in previous years, you get a second chance in the finals [if you finish in the top four] and generally [a] team in the top four goes on with it. We've got to pace [ourselves] well and turn up every week to achieve that."
