Budding Newcastle halfback Tyrone Roberts has struggled to put into words where the Knights are struggling following their sixth straight loss last Sunday.
The Knights held the momentum for the majority of the game against the Wests Tigers but failed to stand up when it counted and paid for it with a three-point defeat, despite scoring more tries than their opponents.
The result left even Roberts confused as to where the club is lacking across the park.
"I'm not sure [where we're going wrong]. Everyone's trying hard," Roberts told NRL.com.
"It's the luck of the draw I guess. The boys are putting the effort in, we're just not getting the right calls and the result at the end of it is heartbreaking."
With the Knights falling to their 10th loss of the season and sitting just one position above the last-placed Sharks on points differential, Roberts said it was a time for Newcastle to discover their resiliency.
"Things just aren't going our way. We just have to hang in there. We have to stay together and I'm sure the results will change soon," Roberts said.
"Everyone's devastated at the moment. Every loss is devastating but we just have to keep moving forward and try and get the win.
"[Coach Wayne Bennett] is heartbroken as well and so he should be. It's just not coming together unfortunately."
While the 23-year-old Ballina Seagulls junior has come along in leaps and bounds since making his representative debut for Country Origin five weeks ago – with eight try assists and nine line break assists to his name already this year – the young halfback's focus is set solely on the Knights as they gear up to take on the Roosters on Saturday night.
"[My form] was a bit up-and-down at the start of the season but the last month it's all been coming together because the boys are starting to all play together as a team and just work harder as a team," Roberts said.
"The results aren't coming our way but at least the effort is there and we just have to keep it up.
"We just have to go out and give all we can give [against the Roosters] and hopefully we get the result. I'm sure the boys will rip in this week and come out next weekend and go out there and perform well."
With Beau Scott and Darius Boyd on Origin duty, Kade Snowden suspended and Joey Leilua succumbing to a throat injury, the Knights have drafted in Joseph Tapine, Jake Mamo, Clint Newton and Josh Mantellato as they look to snap up their losing streak and chase their first win since Round 6.
