Last week, Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson gave Latrell Mitchell a "pass mark" for his three-try haul against the Gold Coast Titans.

His harsh critiquing continued on Thursday night when he downplayed Luke Keary's performance against the Bulldogs despite the five-eighth racking up three try assists in the 28-24 win at Allianz Stadium.

The former Rabbitoh continued his hot start for the Tricolours by laying on an early try for Boyd Cordner, before he put Mitchell Aubusson over at the other end of the field to give his side some breathing space late in the match.

As good as he was in the eyes of impartial judges Keary still has some work to do, according to his new coach.

Robinson was particularly upset with a poor defensive read that allowed Adam Elliot to score in the 63rd minute, while he also bemoaned a couple of errors with loose balls; one of which led to Josh Morris's second try at the death.

"He was really good in the first half but disappointing in the second half," Robinson said after the game.

"That inside shoulder [read] for that try was not good enough. You can't let a guy go through your line like that. He missed that loose ball and then they scored - sometimes it's hard to stop those – but that inside shoulder, you can't do that.

"Luke is playing some really good footy…but even he'll be disappointed with that."

It was a strange old game for the Roosters who recovered from a slow start to be in control for the entire match without ever looking entirely comfortable.

Their cause wasn't helped by a 5-2 penalty count against them nor their 73 per cent completion rate, but Robinson said he was pleased with the way in which his troops moved the ball around even when they were under the pump.

"I felt like we were playing really well, and we made lots of errors," he said.

"[We were] giving away a penalty, or dropping the ball or a strip or diving on a loose ball, but I felt like we were right in the match. I felt like there was a really good vibe between our whole line, but then there were lots of errors. We were so far from home, but we were on the right track at the same time.

"I like the way that we're going about our games at the moment, but as I said, we're a long way from where we need to be."

Roosters captain Jake Friend put the error count down to teething problems between new combinations.

"We're probably putting a bit more pressure on ourselves, but we can only improve from here," he said.

"Those littler errors are just on individuals, and hopefully as the season progresses, the boys are gelling together more and those things will be few and far between."
