Wavell State High School will take on Endeavour Sports High School in the second semi-final of the GIO Schoolboy Cup at Kougari Oval in Wynnum Manly on Wednesday.
The winner of this match will advance to the GIO Schoolboy Cup Final, which will be held on Wednesday, September 17th against Patrician Brothers Blacktown who beat Palm Beach Currumbin State High School in Tuesday's semi-final.
Wavell State High School are coming off a high-scoring and entertaining match against The Hills Sports High School, which saw the Queensland school run out 48-32 victors.
Wavell know that their defence will need to be tighter coming up against the famed Sutherland Shire School.
Wavell State High School coach Dave Porter believes that their defensive cohesion will be an important aspect if they are to come away with the win.
“We let far too many points last match. We cannot afford to do that again. If we do we will be punished,” said Porter.
The Wavell side, are not taking their opposition lightly and are expecting a tough match to earn a position in the GIO Schoolboy Cup Final.
“Endeavour is a prestigious school with a proud history. They performed well in their last start and we know that we will have to be at our best to get the win,” Porter continued.
Wavell's side oozes class across the park and Porter believes that each player has a key role to play in order for Wavell to get the win.
“Every player has a job to do and if everyone carries out their job properly we will come away with the win,” he said.
Endeavour Sports High School are riding high coming off a 50-0 thrashing of Farrer MAHS in the GIO Schoolboy Cup quarter-finals; however they know that they face a different beast in the semi-final.
Endeavour coach Dave Howlett believes his side will have to be at their best to come out with the win.
“We played great in our last match and as a result came away with a big win. In the semi though none of that matters and we need to at our best to beat Wavell,” he said.
The journey to Queensland is also a factor but it’s something that Howlett believes his side will be equipped to handle.
“It’s a long trip up but we have a good group here that will be able to handle the travel and not let it affect them heading into the match,” he said.
Endeavour Sports, like Wavell, are also not taking their opponents lightly.
“They are a talented side. They finished top of Queensland so they are obviously going to be a tough side to beat,” Howlett said.
