The NRL stars without a try in 2017

With three rounds left of the Telstra Premiership season several players will be making it their mission to go over for a four-pointer after going 23 rounds without one so far in 2017.

There are 139 players who have yet to cross the stripe in fact – some of which are injured or out of favour or not regular first-graders.

For the big men up front in particular, it's always a tough ask to get amongst the tries and they feature heavily on the list. That's why when you see them get over the line in the latter part of the season you could be mistaken for thinking they had just won the grand final.

For others, the wait has been a lot longer with Cowboys utility John Asiata on top of the list – still yet to go over for a try in 71 games since making his NRL debut in 2014.

Making matters worse for Asiata is the fact he had a disallowed try earlier in the season, and while he has gone scoreless a hobbling Greg Inglis managed get over the line with a ruptured ACL in Round 1 in his only game of the season.

And finally, a couple of shocks with outside backs Cameron Munster and Will Hopoate (15 games each) are also in a dry patch despite setting up eight and five tries respectively this season.

Munster's move into the No.6 jersey this year has been a success for Melbourne on the paddock, just not on his own personal try-scoring tally.

Bulldogs fullback Hopoate went close in the second half last Thursday night but couldn't regather a Marcelo Montoya kick.

When NRL.com asked the former Sea Eagle about the duck egg next to his name this season, he was well aware of the statistic.

"It is a dry spell and hopefully I can cross the white line before the season ends," Hopoate laughed.

"No player wants to do a nudie run at the end of the season. There is still a glimmer of hope so I'll be praying and we'll see what happens."

All jokes aside, the Bulldogs have struggled with their attack in 2018. However with more carries and run metres this year than any other season of his career, there is an argument Hopoate is doing all he can.

"I haven't seen it as a concern. I think the only thing I'm worried about is that we haven't done our best as a team with results," Hopoate said.

"Obviously we wanted to be in finals contention but it just wasn't meant to be this season and if anything that's what has frustrated me the most."
