Warriors address their road woes

Whatever the Warriors have been doing in the lead-up to away matches this year, the numbers suggest it hasn't been working.

Without a single away win from five attempts in 2017, the Warriors are the equal-worst road team in the NRL Telstra Premiership heading into Friday night's Round 13 clash against the Parramatta Eels at ANZ Stadium.

Hooker Nathaniel Roache told NRL.com it was an issue the squad had discussed and as a result they had tweaked their build-up in an attempt to turn things around.

"It's definitely a point we addressed this week, and it comes down to preparation," Roache said.

"We have to fix that because it does take a toll on our bodies travelling the distance we do. The mental side of it shouldn't matter too much, no matter where you are you give your best.

"But physically it does take a toll on your body sitting in that plane for three hours.

"But it's not an excuse and it's something we can fix as a team."

‌The solution could be as simple as making the effort to do the fundamentals more often according to 23-year-old prop Sam Lisone.

"I think it's maybe just about doing more stretching and getting the sleeping right. For me it's probably sleeping that's the struggle," Lisone said.

"On away trips I am awake at four in the morning because that's six in the morning over here, and that's where my body clock is at. So trying to get a bit more sleep is one thing."

Success on the road has eluded the Warriors for much of their 22-year history. Last season they only managed three victories away from New Zealand, while you have to go way back to 2011 to find a season where they achieved more than four wins on Australian soil.

This year the Kiwi franchise have conceded 25.2 points per game on the road on average, compared to 19 at home, while they have scored only 14.8 points per game at away venues compared to 18.2 when hosting.

But while his players were happy to confront the topic mid-week, coach Stephen Kearney preferred to downplay the unfavourable statistics.

"It's not an issue for me, if we talk about it and make it an issue it becomes an issue, that's the reality of our circumstance and it's just making sure we get on with it and get the job done," Kearney said.

"I'd rather put my energy into making sure that we prepare well.

"I think the last few [away] games we have been getting close… it's just about making sure that we take the right attitude.

"That is our focus again, it's a pretty short turnaround, our couple of sessions are about making sure we train really well to play well on Friday night."
