Brisbane Broncos coach Wayne Bennett.

Veteran Broncos coach Wayne Bennett has never been a fan of golden point, never has been and never will be, and it was literally a point that hit home even more following his team's 17-16 grand final loss to the Cowboys in extra time on Sunday.

Happy to come back next week for a grand final replay, with the scores locked at 16-all at the end of regulation time, Bennett said he had no problem with the Cowboys or how the game was played, rather he was displeased with the way the grand final had to be decided.

Labelling the system as "disadvantageous" Bennett spoke of the golden point system in the same vein he did when it was introduced back in 2003.

"I've never been a fan of golden point. At the end of the day it's a lottery and it's unfair on everybody and it was most unfair here," Bennett said.

"I would have been happy to come back next week and play and I still don't see what's wrong with a draw. The game lived with it for a hundred years and we didn't have golden point and it was still a great game.

"I'm pleased for the Cowboys, I've got no problems there, the point I'm making about golden point was that I've said it since it was introduced well over a decade ago now and it hasn't changed.

"It's highlighted even more how disadvantageous it is. That was my issue. I had no other issue with the way the game was played and the Cowboys success."

However the master coach was delighted that he was able to discuss the greatness of the game, with it being easily one of the best grand finals of all-time.

With his team holding strong for the most part in the second half, it was a freakish flick pass from Cowboys five-eighth Michael Morgan to winger Kyle Feldt which sent the game into golden point with just one second remaining on the clock, that proved Brisbane's undoing.

From a Feldt kick-off to begin golden point, Broncos halfback Ben Hunt dropped the ball 10 metres out from his own goal-line which offered the setup for Johnathan Thurston's match-winning field goal.

"The bottom line here is that was an absolutely outstanding game of football. At the end of the day we got beaten on a field goal so do we feel beaten? No we don't. Are we disappointed? Of course we are. But it's not about winning and losing all the time," Bennett said.

"We had a wonderful grand final here and it takes two teams for that and we were the other team. We know the glory goes to the winner and that's fine, I'm happy with that, but these guys were absolutely outstanding and they've had an outstanding year.

"[We have] been brave all season. We've earned the right to be here and they were as good as the Cowboys. The Cowboys weren't better than us. It was just a great game of football and the end result at full-time was 16-all."

In his first season back at the Broncos since leaving for the Dragons in 2009, Bennett remained above all optimistic of what the club can achieve in seasons ahead.

"The great clubs have continuity of coaches and continuity of staff and we're in our first year so we're optimistic. We won't always finish up here every season but you'll build something like we built in the past and we can build it again in the future," he said.

"We're probably a bit ahead of ourselves being here. No one thought we'd be here tonight, including ourselves so I'm looking forward to [what the future brings]."
