Tall and athletic, Colin Best will retire at the end of this season as one of the game’s greatest quiet achievers.
An Engadine Dragons junior, Best’s career started at Cronulla in 1998 and will wind up there this year after 15 seasons, in which he enjoyed a reputation as a no-nonsense performer as a winger or centre and a prolific accumulator of tries.
He played at four premiership clubs including the Sharks, St George Illawarra, Canberra and South Sydney and also spent two seasons in the English Super League with Hull.
He earned his highest recognition in 2008 when he was named Dally M winger of the year after making a major contribution to the Canberra Raiders’ charge to that year’s play-offs.
From a try-scoring viewpoint, his returned his most profitable season at the Dragons in 2006 when he thrived on the service of centre Mark Gasnier to finish with 20 tries.
Best managed only a brief foray into representative football, playing in a City Origin side that was heavily beaten by Country in 2001. And although he’s had plenty of experience in finals football, an appearance on grand final day has so far proved elusive.
Perhaps his greatest moment in the game still awaits him.
