The Warriors wanted Micheal Luck to sign a new one-year deal with the club for 2013 but Luck’s body was telling him it was time to call it a day.
Five years with the Cowboys and seven with the Warriors had taken a heavy toll and Luck reluctantly made the decision to retire early in the 2012 season.
A highly respected figure at both of his NRL clubs, Luck played above his weight and routinely tackled himself to a standstill in 225 top grade appearances (he plays his 226th and final game at Mt Smart Stadium against Canberra in Round 26).
Originally from the Lockyer Valley town of Gatton, west of Brisbane, Luck made his mark as a schoolboy and featured in Queensland representative teams at under-17s and under-19s levels.
He completed his education in Townsville after being identified by the Cowboys and made his top grade debut in Cairns a few days after his 19th birthday in 2001.
He was named in Queensland’s Emerging Origin squad in 2002 but a succession of injuries thwarted his representative ambitions.
He was forced to wait until 2010 for his first senior rep jersey when he was named in the Australian Prime Minister’s XIII. Luck was named the Warriors’ player of the year in 2009 and achieved a career highlight in 2011 when he contributed to the club’s stirring charge to the grand final.
