Kurt Mann is under no illusions his recent switch to the halfback role is likely to be another temporary one with Broncos playmaker Ben Hunt joining the Red V next season.
The Queensland-born utility has chopped and changed from the bench to various positions a career-high 10 times this season and more recently his move into the No.7 jersey has come on the back the Dragons' shock upset losses to Newcastle and South Sydney.
An honest Mann will line-up alongside skipper Gareth Widdop for the third time in the halves in 2017 and will play future recruit Hunt in Friday night's must-win clash.
Fresh after signing a new two-year deal with the club, he insists it wasn't to continue playing a utility role.
"I'm still not too sure what's going to happen. I've told [McGregor] I want to nail something down and not be stuck doing this for the rest of my career," Mann told NRL.com.
"I do get confused sometimes if I'm kicking or catching having played in the halves at the start of the year and then I'll be switching in-between."
Mann could've easily put himself on the open market but was enjoying his time in Wollongong under Dragons coach Paul McGregor and conceded if he moved on he would be back down the pecking order for a regular starting birth.
"It's good and bad in a way," Mann said.
"I'm always the next cab off the rank if someone gets injured, but the bad thing is I don't know where I'm playing week-to-week and that's what I'm doing at the moment.
"I'd prefer to find one or two positions and try to nail them down but at this point in time it's just what's required.
"A five-eighth spot suits me a bit more than playing in the centres with my body shape or a fullback position but obviously we got Gareth here."
Mann admitted the two losses against the Knights and Rabbitohs have hurt the side's chances of making the finals and only had themselves to blame.
McGregor came under the spotlight in the side's seven-point loss to the Knights with a $10,000 fine for post-match comments, but he was left with no excuses following the last-minute defeat to the Bunnies.
"If we play well but don't get the result he can cop that but [against Souths] we played well then put the cue in the rack for the last 10 minutes and got done," he said.
"He was furious and had steam coming out of his ears and rightfully so."
The 24-year-old was a late inclusion in the halfback role in the Dragons' 42-16 win over the Gold Coast Titans last start and scored a double in the 26-point win.
St George Illawarra will meet the Broncos on Friday for the first time in 2017 in their only regular season fixture.
"We've backed ourselves into a corner now and put ourselves in a position where we do need to win every game so it cannot get any more desperate than that," Mann said.
"Hopefully we can put in a good performance this weekend."
