Josh Mansour is shaving his beard for a good cause in December.

If you don't recognise Penrith Panthers winger Josh Mansour in the new year, there will be a valid reason.

The Australian representative has joined forces with Bowel Cancer Australia to launch "Sauce Shaves for a Cause" in December, agreeing to shave his trademark beard when he reaches a fundraising target of $10,000.

In a similar initiative to "Movember", Decembeard raises awareness throughout the month to encourage men to shave for a cause.

Bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in Australia. On average 11 people die from the disease daily.

"The statistics on bowel cancer are shocking," Mansour said.

"The privilege of being an NRL player puts me in a unique position to get involved.

"This is a disease we need to be talking about. I'm proud to take part in Decembeard and lend my beard to such an important cause."

Decembeard started in 2013 and is an initiative Bowel Cancer Australia hopes to continue helping with their vision in improving early detection, research and treatment through money raised.

"While men love talking rugby league, they're far less keen to talk bowel cancer," Claire Annear said, National Community Engagement Manager of Bowel Cancer Australia.

"Having Josh and his spectacular beard supporting Decembeard means we're making more Aussies aware of this disease.

"We're very appreciative of Josh's support this Decembeard, helping us beat bowel cancer by challenging his chin curls, and inspiring others to do the same."

Mansour has kick-started the fundraising campaign with an early donation of $300.
