NRL referees boss Tony Archer has addressed the contentious refereeing calls from the first week of the finals, including the decision to award Jordan Kahu a penalty try in the Broncos' win over the Titans and a close-call decision on a possible Josh Morris try for the Bulldogs against the Panthers.
For Archer, the correct decision was made in the Kahu incident, claiming that both elements of a penalty try were present.
"The first element is the player in possession of the ball is going to score a try, would've scored a try, other than for the unfair play from the defending player," Archer said on NRL HQ.
"So in these circumstances you can see that Jordan Kahu has possession of the ball, he has the ball over the try-line in the act of trying to bring the ball to the ground.
"At that point Konrad Hurrell kicks the ball out of his hand, that's the unfair play element. To have both of those present, it's a penalty try."
Archer also went on to say a possible try to Bulldogs centre Josh Morris in Sunday's elimination final should have been referred to the bunker.
"As you can see there if the referee's coming cross-field, then he needs to have clear vision of the ball all the way to determine whether it has reached the line," Archer explained.
"In the case where the ball has reached the line obviously the second element that has to be considered is whether or not it is a double movement by Morris and whether or not the ball makes the line. In those circumstances it should've definitely been sent to the bunker."
