Hits and tries of the week: Round 3

The incredible talent and forceful hits kept coming in Round 3. We’ve put every game under the microscope to come up with these gems:

Round 3 – Top 5 Tries

1. What can you say about Rhys Wesser’s left-handed reverse flick offload to Greg Inglis who fed winger Fetuli Talanoa for the Rabbitohs’ second try after 21 minutes but: “How the heck did he do that?”

Watch Wesser's flick offload

2. Veteran second-rower Michael Crocker showed the value of persistent support play when he was gifted a dream bounce following Nathan Merritt’s well-weighted centre kick late in their win over the Eels. Fingertip control from an enforcer… you don’t see that every day.

Watch Crocker's try

3. Was Titans No.3 Steve Michaels’ runaway try on the halftime hooter against his former club Brisbane one of the most remarkable against-the-run-of-play efforts in recent memory? And was Broncos’ winger Gerard Beale given much stick by his team-mates for his air-swing swat when he had the chance to defuse the situation?

You be the judge, check out Michael's try and Beale's gaffe

4. A pearler of a centre-field kick by Sea Eagle Michael Oldfield – off the outside of his right boot while running down the left flank – was swooped upon by David Williams who crossed for his second try against the Knights. If it looked nothing special, you’d be wrong.

5. Remember the name: Kalifa Faifai Loa. The 21-year-old made a dream debut for the Cowboys on the left wing against the Storm, setting up Matt Bowen’s try in the 12th minute with a 47-metre kick-return (brushing aside Cameron Smith, do you mind) and well-judged inside pass to his flying team-mate in support.

Round 3 – Top 5 Hits

1. Broncos winger Jharal Yow Yeh made the highlights reel for a second successive week, this time for his effective hit on Titan Esi Tonga.

2. Gerard Beale made up for his defensive gaffe on Steve Michaels (see above) with a spectacular try-saver on Titans fullback William Zillman that ended up being the game-changer. How Zillman didn’t score we’re still trying to figure out…

Check out Beale's try-saver

3. It was 70 per cent Trevor Thurling and 30 per cent Josh Dugan who combined to flatten Wests Tigers fullback Wade McKinnon in the 62nd minute of their clash at Campbelltown Stadium. Ouch!

4. Meet Anthony Minichiello, human pinball! If ‘Mini wasn’t seeing flashing lights after Michael Ennis’ initial bruising hit, he was after copping a follow-up from big bad Bulldog Frank Pritchard.

5. If there’s one player you don’t want to run into it’s Mose Masoe – just ask Bulldog Dean Halatau, who ended up battered just by colliding with the Roosters enforcer’s chest!
