Roosters veteran Anthony Minichiello will captain Italy in this year's European Zone Qualifiers in a bid to help the nation qualify for the 2013 World Cup.

Former NSW Origin and Australian Test star Minichiello is one of five NRL players named in the Italian squad, alongside Newcastle's Cameron Ciraldo (vice-captain), Manly's Vic Mauro, the Roosters' Aiden Guerra and Bulldog Joel Romelo.

Minichiello represented Italy three internationals as a 19-year-old in 1999 before making his NRL debut with the Roosters the following year.

The Italians will face Russia, Serbia and Lebanon in October, with the winner of the tournament to earn a place at the 2013 World Cup.
