The NRL has confirmed that this evening’s Telstra Premiership match between the Melbourne Storm and the Sydney Roosters will go ahead despite disruptions to domestic air travel because of a volcanic ash cloud.

The five-man refereeing squad for the match successfully boarded a flight for Albury this morning and will drive to Melbourne in ample time for the 7.00pm kick off this evening. The Sydney Roosters have been in Melbourne since yesterday morning.

Tonight’s Toyota Cup match has however been cancelled with the Roosters Toyota Cup team unable to board their flight this to Melbourne this morning.

The NRL has been advised that it will not be possible to arrange flights in time to allow the team an adequate preparation. Toyota Cup squads, where possible, travel on the same day of the match.

The Toyota Cup match will be rescheduled at an appropriate time.

Away from tonight’s match the Wests Tigers remain in Auckland because of flight cancellations and it is hoped that the team will be able to return to Australia tomorrow.
