Retiring Newcastle Knights centre Adam MacDougall has blamed Andrew and Matthew Johns for his reputation as the NRL's "Mad Dog", but says there should be no doubt about the identity of the game's next immortal.

Sitting down in an exclusive interview with to discuss his record-breaking career, MacDougall opened up on his rivalry with Wendell Sailor, some wayward rumours about himself, and why Andrew Johns should beat Darren Lockyer to be named rugby league's next immortal.

"Andrew Johns is the best player I have played with and against, head and shoulders above anyone else," MacDougall said.

"At the moment there is a debate over who the next immortal should be, but for me I don't think there should be any debate about it at all."
