Boom second-rower Tariq Sims has accepted a new off-field role with the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys, becoming the club’s first membership ambassador.

Last season’s Rookie of the Year will feature heavily in all of the club’s membership promotions in the lead-up to the 2012 season and he will also be a regular at special members-only events during the next year.

Sims has quickly become a favourite with Cowboys’ members, thanks to his outstanding form on the field during his first season with North Queensland and the voluntary work he performs off the field which earned him a nomination for the 2011 Ken Stephen Medal.

Sims and his NRL teammates will wear their membership numbers on their 2012 club polo shirts with pride.

“It’s an honour to be involved in the club’s membership program and I’m looking forward to meeting as many of our members as I can over the next 12 months,” Sims said today.

“Having a strong membership base is important for our club and I know the players really respect and appreciate those people who join up and support us through the whole season.

“We have plenty of long-time members here at the Cowboys and we’d like to thank them for continuing to be part of the club – I’m sure they, like us, would like their numbers to be even greater in 2012.

“The more support we can get at Dairy Farmers Stadium, and at our away games, the better and more enjoyable it is for everyone.”

Cowboys membership manager Tracey Button said the club was delighted Sims had taken on the ambassador role.

“Tariq is one of our most popular players and I’m sure all our members will look forward to catching up with him during the coming season,” she said.

“We have a number of membership initiatives that we’ll be rolling out in the next few months that we’re sure all of our members will enjoy hearing about and being involved in.”

Tariq will also feature in a membership television, radio and billboard campaign, starting from 23 November.

One of his first duties in the role will be to present long-time Cowboys members Joe and Tracey Apap with their 2012 tickets, as part of their Gold Star memberships.

Cowboys members who renew their membership as a Gold Star, Stockyard or Silver Star member or new members who join by 31 December will automatically go in the draw to win a fantastic member prize.

The lucky winner will receive a cheque to the value of their individual membership package, a 2012 Cowboys jersey featuring their name on the back, an invitation to the 2012 Cowboys Corporate Launch, the chance to have their photo taken with the 2012 Cowboys team, a framed team photo, an invitation to the 2012 Derby Dinner and an invitation to the end-of-season.
