Sydney will host a public tribute to Rugby League Immortal Arthur Beetson on the Sydney Cricket Ground at 1pm (AEDT) on December 18.

The Sydney Roosters, Men of League, National Rugby League, Balmain Tigers and the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust will host the public event to coincide with a memorial service being held at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium.

Men of League Chairman, Mr Ron Coote, said today that the event was a chance for Sydney fans to say farewell to the legendary forward who will be buried after a private funeral in Brisbane tomorrow.

“He was an inspirational player and an inspirational person,”   Mr Coote, his 1974-75 Premiership-winning team-mate, said today.

“Arthur was a wonderful man who loved life and he deserves to be celebrated.

“He was a proud Australian, a proud Queenslander and a proud Aboriginal and there will be many people I think who will want the chance to say goodbye.”

The service will commence at 1pm (12pm Qld time) and will feature tributes from Indigenous leaders, former team-mates and entertainers as well as a video tribute from Channel Nine.

Channel Nine commentator Ray Warren has agreed to host what organisers hope will be a true celebration of Arthur’s incredible achievements.

Gates will open from 12:30pm, there is no charge for entry.
