Oates re-signs with Broncos for 2019

Corey Oates has inked a one-year deal with the Brisbane Broncos and backed himself to earn a long-term contract at the club that first signed him as a teenager.

The powerful 24-year-old Maroons winger was one of three big-name Brisbane players – along with Tevita Pangai jnr and Matt Lodge -  to remain off-contract beyond October 31, the end of the rugby league contractual year.

The Broncos are expected to announce extensions for Pangai and Lodge in the coming weeks as they finalise the squad new coach Anthony Seibold will have at his disposal in 2019.

Oates, who changed managers several months ago, said his aim was to secure a lengthy career at Brisbane by proving to Seibold that he deserved it.

"The best thing to do was to get the one-year deal sorted. I don't want to go anywhere else," Oates said.

"I did a one-year deal last season to prove that I deserve a bigger contract, not money-wise, but because I want to stay here for a long time and do whatever I can for this club.

"There's been a lot going on in the back end of the season behind the scenes – and the best option was to clear my head, sign the one-year deal and back myself once again."

Oates has scored 78 tries in 120 games for the Broncos and was the club's leading try scorer in 2018 with 18. It was a season where he won Brisbane's best back award on presentation night and regained his Queensland jersey on the back of several match-winning performances which featured his freakish finishes and rampaging runs from the back-field.

Oates is one of the Broncos most popular players and a favourite with supporters, highlighted by him winning the XXXX Fan Player Of The Year.

NRL.com understands he has also secured several third-party media deals for 2019, including one with radio station Nova, which will enable Oates to make the most of the appeal he has to a wide cross-section of the public.
