June 5: Gallen goes toe to toe with Myles; a Dally M winner was born

On this day, Justin Hodges makes two massive Maroons blunders, a Dally M Medal winner was born and rivals Paul Gallen and Nate Myles resort to fisticuffs in Origin.

1920

England play Sydney in the opening match of their Australian tour before a capacity crowd of 67,739 at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

1962

Chris Walsh was born. The tireless forward, who played one State of Origin game for NSW in 1984, played 86 games for St George and 77 matches for Illawarra in an 11-year career which ended in 1992 after he had captained the Steelers to victory in the pre-season tournament that year.

1993

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck was born in Samoa. The Kiwi international made his NRL debut with the Roosters in 2012 and played 83 matches for the Tricolours, including the grand final victory of 2013, before joining the Warriors in 2016.

The fleet-footed fullback became captain of the club and won the Dally M Medal in 2018. He left the Warriors midway through the 2021 season to play rugby in New Zealand and have a crack at making the All Blacks side.

2002

Queensland level the State of Origin series with a pulsating 26-18 win at ANZ Stadium. Rookie winger Justin Hodges hands NSW two tries with reckless passes in his own in-goal.

The Maroons’ other winger, Lote Tuqiri finishes with a record haul (for a Queensland Origin player) of 18 points, from three tries and three goals. NSW fullback Brett Hodgson suffers a collapsed lung and suspected broken ribs.

2010

Cronulla fullback Nathan Gardner scores one of the most sensational individual tries of the season as the Sharks crush the Sydney Roosters 42-18 at Sydney Football Stadium.

2011

North Queensland stage a remarkable comeback to thrash Canberra 40-24 after trailing 22-0 midway through the first half.

2013

NSW draw first blood in the State of Origin series with a 14-6 win over the Maroons at ANZ Stadium. Blues captain Paul Gallen lets fly with a flurry of punches on Maroons forward Nate Myles.

2016

Gold Coast halfback Ash Taylor lands a field goal to secure a 29-28 golden-point victory over South Sydney at Perth’s nib Stadium. The game achieves a significant piece of history with a record 12 Indigenous players involved.
