Referees co-coaches Stuart Raper and Bill Harrigan answer your most frequently asked questions from Round 20 of the NRL Telstra
Premiership.

•    Was there a forward pass involved in the Gold Coast Titans first try against the Broncos?

The referees are in a good position and they feel that the pass was flat. The pass is made to look bad because Zillman stops after he throws it. We were happy with the play-on ruling.

•    Was it the right decision by the video referee to disallow Akuila Uate’s try?

It is a knock-on. The video referee got the right decision with this one. Uate drops the ball and he must get his hand back on the ball before it hits the ground. In this situation, Uate gets his hand on the ball simultaneously with the ball hitting the ground and therefore it is a knock-on.

•    What did you think Penalty against Melbourne’s Sisa Waqa for walking off the mark?

This was a tough call against Melbourne. Ideally we would have liked the referee to tell Waqa to go back and play-the-ball. Waqa was falling over and it was a slightly tough call. The referee could have penalised Parramatta players for being over the top of him, but the best decision would have been for him to go back to the mark and play-the-ball.

•    What did you think of the decision to award Parramatta’s Ben Smith a try?

There is a camera angle that shows Smith has a hand on the ball and it was in contact with the ground. We are comfortable with the benefit of the doubt decision in this instance.

Due to some incidents being subject to the NRL judiciary, we can not make any comment prior to the matters being finalised.
