Earlier this week, referees co-coach Bill Harrigan came into Rugby League Central to package a video on the obstruction rule for all coaches in the NRL.

The video is aimed at providing a greater understanding of the obstruction rule and breaking down key components of the rule, using examples from matches played in 2012.

After distributing this video to the coaches to ‘dispel confusion surrounding obstruction calls’ on Wednesday, NRL.com gained permission from the referees to publish the video for all rugby league fans to watch.

In the video, Harrigan reminds the coaches that the obstruction rule is based around clear guidelines but will still come down to a subjective call from the referees.

“Obstructions are subjective and you can’t put black and white parameters around them,” he said.

“Each one can be different and needs to be judged on its merit.

“However, we do have guidelines that we adhere to. In this video we give you examples of acceptable and unacceptable plays according to the guidelines.”
