The NRL today congratulated Touch Football Australia and the Australian teams for a highly successful World Cup.
Players from 25 countries took part in the Federation of International Touch (FIT) World Cup at C.Ex International Stadium at Coffs Harbour last weekend.
Australia won eight of the nine divisions played, including retaining the Open's and Masters World Cup trophies.
Touch Football Australia Chief Executive, Colm Maguire said a highlight of the World Cup was the emergence of new participants, particularly from the Pacific Islands.
He said countries such as the Cook Islands and Papua New Guinea had been competitive with the top countries – and would be even better in the future.
"It was a wonderful event and we would anticipate even more nations taking part in the next World Cup in Malaysia," Mr Maguire said.
"It means our sport will grow further and become even more inclusive."
Mr Maguire thanked the NRL for its support of the tournament and said fans would be able to watch the best of the World Cup on Channel 9 later this month.
NRL Head of Football, Todd Greenberg said organisers had done an amazing job to stage the World Cup given one full day's play was washed out.
"In the end, the top teams made it through to the finals which is testimony to their skills – and the hard work of organisers in rescheduling matches," he said.
"The performance of the Australian teams, winning all but one of the nine divisions, was simply outstanding.
"Touch Football is in great shape in this country and it is an important part of the Rugby League community.
"What is really pleasing is to see men and women of all ages playing the game, enjoying themselves and performing so well.
"So congratulations to everyone involved – from players to officials and organisers - in a very successful World Cup."
