Tough Plays of the Month: September

The NRL Telstra Premiership season hit its climax in September with the final round of the regular season and the first three weeks of the finals. We've come up with five Mazda BT-50 Tough Plays of the Month.

'Tommy Trbo' lights up Lottoland

While Manly would go on to lose to Penrith the following week, they sent a finals warning with a good win over the Panthers in Round 26. Tom Trbojevic made the Manly No.1 jersey his own in 2017, and after making an initial break backed up on the next play to score a handy four-pointer.

Tolman escapes the nudie run

With just 14 minutes remaining in the Bulldogs' 2017 campaign, Aiden Tolman couldn't have picked a better time to score his first try of the year. There are few tougher competitors in the NRL, with the tireless prop playing 80 minutes on four occasions this season. But with his side trailing the Dragons, Tolman backed up Will Hopoate on the inside and dived over, the Dogs going on to claim victory that ensured eventual grand finalists the Cowboys would scrape into the top eight with the Red V missing out.

Can't stop Taumalolo

Key to the Cowboys' run to the grand final, Jason Taumalolo was at his brilliant best against the Sharks in the first week of the finals. The 2016 Dally M medallist was tough to contain right across the season and against the Sharks scored a try with no fewer than four Cronulla players hanging off him.

Melbourne miracle

Up until this season the Storm haven't really been known for their razzle-dazzle attack. Structure and resolute defence have been the trademarks of their play, but a willingness to spread the ball became key to their premiership victory in 2017. Trailing the Eels in the first week of the finals, some off-the-cuff play produced points with Kenny Bromwich sealing a memorable team try. Sit back and enjoy some brilliance from the premiers.

Another Feldt special

His most famous four-pointer sent the 2015 Grand Final into golden point and a spectacular leaping effort against the Panthers in Round 16 earnt him try of the year, and Kyle Feldt was at it again to help propel the Cowboys into the 2017 decider. With North Queensland down by two, Feldt twisted and planted down past three Roosters defenders for another eye-catching try.
