19. 1980, Beetson in Qld jersey for first time

The moment that started it all. The godfather of Origin. The great Arthur Beetson was in the twilight of a storied career – which included 18 matches for New South Wales under the old representative system as an Eastern Suburbs player – when he made history as the Queensland captain in the inaugural State of Origin match. He wrote his name even deeper into Origin folklore with a swinging arm on Eels teammate Mick Cronin to give rise to the "state against state, mate against mate" mantra. Would Origin be what it is today without Big Artie? No matter on which side of the border your heart lies, we all owe Beetson a debt of gratitude for the amazing spectacle Origin is today.
