As part of the NRL Community Awards presented by Westpac, the Indigenous Community Award is presented to someone who has acted as an exceptional advocate for the growth of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s participation in rugby league.

Eligibility

Nominations are open to any registered volunteer within the Rugby League community i.e., coach, teacher, referee, club official, grounds keeper, club administrator, advocate etc.

  1. Must be a current volunteer in rugby league.
  2. Must not have received payment for the activities nominated for.
  3. Must be of good standing in their community, i.e., not serving any suspensions. 

Criteria

The nominees must have demonstrated through their volunteer work the NRL’s beliefs that we are: Inclusive, Positive, United and Disciplined. 

The award criteria’s focus is primarily on the volunteer’s contribution for 2024 season, demonstrated through your responses to the following questions:

You can provide your answers to the nomination questions via a written or video response. For the written responses, a minimum of 150 words and a maximum of 300 words for each nomination criteria question is required. The more detail and thought put into the nomination, the more chance of being in the running.

  1. What is the current role of the nominee in rugby league and the nature of the work they undertake?
  2. Please describe how the volunteer has made a contribution to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in rugby league.
  3. Please describe how the nominee has used their voice to act as an advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ participation in rugby league.
  4. How does the volunteer inspire the rugby league community to build respect and trust between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous Australians? 
  5. Outline any unique challenges or obstacles that were overcome to participate in volunteer work.
