Manly’s favourite son, Steve Menzies talks to one of sunny Manly’s favourites, BigPond Sports John Gibbs.
Now regarded as one of rugby league’s most durable, Menzies made his first-grade debut in 1993.
From there he rewrote the record books playing 349 games in the top grade - all for his believed Sea Eagles – to equal Terry Lamb’s all-time record for appearances.
Mr Durability was also a try-scorer and crossed the stripe an incredible 180 times, a record that ranks him second to Ken Irvine (212) as the game’s most prolific. All the more impressive when you consider Menzies is really a forward.
Beaver’s magic ride in the NRL finished in the most spectacular fashion with Manly storming to a massive grand final win in Menzies last match.
The fairytale finish to a fairytale career is still keeping Menzies warm as he pounds the frozen ground in the English Super League.
Hear the man himself recount his memories of that magic night, pay tribute to the players he most admired and theorise about the future – and his grandstand – in our intimate one-on-one.
The Menzies interview will air on Friday, 6 March between midday and 2pm, after the BigPond Sport News segment.
