The National Rugby League will allow Preston Campbell to continue to wear the Aboriginal Flag on his head gear.
NRL Chief Executive, Mr David Gallop, said there is a need to develop more flexible guidelines that take into account the cultural heritage of players in the correct circumstances. This will be discussed with clubs in coming days.
Following Preston’s impromptu decision to include the Aboriginal Flag on his head gear last week, the Gold Coast Titans were advised that the use of the flag in such a manner contravened existing apparel guidelines.
“The rules are pretty clear as they stand. While that had to be pointed out, this is an issue that is deeply important to the cultural identity of our players and it is worth addressing further,” Mr Gallop said.
“Preston is an outstanding role model for all Australians and I think there is a real need to respect his position and that of other indigenous athletes in finding a practical way forward.
“Until new guidelines are finalised Preston will be able to continue what he is doing.
“On a day when all Australians get behind our national flag we want to make sure we don’t open up an environment for politicising the game but I’m confident that can be avoided.”
