The National Rugby League has today confirmed salary cap fines for five clubs totalling $41,438 following the completion of audits from the 2008 season.
The relatively small size of the fines represents the strongest signs yet that the salary cap is working effectively as an established part of the game. Salary Cap breaches for 2007 totalled $237,135 and for 2006 totalled $464,849.
The breaches represent mostly second-tier salary cap breaches and some general misinterpretations around the salary cap guidelines.
“It’s a pleasing result in many respects but also a reminder to the clubs that even relatively minor breaches must still incur penalties,” NRL Chief Executive, Mr David Gallop, said today.
“The brilliant football we are seeing on the field and the closeness of the competition relate directly to the NRL’s commitment to the salary cap and the efforts of Ian Schubert and his team in ensuring compliance.
“Clearly we intend to continue working with the clubs to ensure that on-going compliance with the salary cap remains a key priority.”
