Melbourne Storm’s Greg Inglis was the star of the 2009 State of Origin series but it is his inspiring efforts off the field that have earned him the One Community Good Guy of the Month award for July.

Inglis was today announced as the recipient of the Good Guy of the Month award in recognition of his youth work and his dedication to helping people in his home town of Bowraville, on the NSW mid-north coast.

While his Maroons teammates were preparing to head into camp to prepare for Game 3 of the State of Origin series, Inglis was answering an SOS call from local police to help them tackle the growing problem of juvenile crime in the area.

Currently completing a Certificate IV in Youth Work, Inglis spoke with students at local schools, delivering messages about staying on the right track while growing up and inspiring them to make the right choices for their future.

As well as his recent trip to Bowraville, Inglis has been involved in several mentoring programs and also participates in the Storm’s ‘Storm’n Start’ Healthy Active Program for school students.

“It’s an honour to receive the award,” Inglis said.

“There are plenty of NRL players out there doing a lot of work for charities and the community and I’m quite humbled to be honest.

“You don’t expect to be rewarded for volunteering your time but, at the same time, it’s nice to be recognised for doing something you enjoy and that puts something back into the community.”

NRL Director, Community Relations, Trish Crews, said: “Greg has such a heart for youth work and it is wonderful to see his passion for helping kids in need.

“He is a deserving winner of the Good Guy of the Month award.”

Inglis joins Jamie Simpson (Rabbitohs), Andrew Ryan (Bulldogs), Justin Carney (Raiders) and Nick Kenny (Broncos) as 2009 recipients of the One Community Good Guy of the Month award, which acknowledges the inspiring work NRL players are doing in the community throughout the season.

As the Good Guy of the Month, Inglis will receive two nights’ accommodation at the Holiday Inn Esplanade in Darwin courtesy of IHG.
