The kick-off time for the Telstra Premiership match between the North Queensland Cowboys and Penrith Panthers  in Townsville on Saturday night has been moved forward two hours to 6.30pm local time (7.30pm Sydney time).

The amended kick-off time was confirmed this afternoon after discussions between the NRL, local authorities, the two competing clubs and match broadcaster Fox Sports as officials monitor the movements of Cyclone Ului.

“We have been advised that the cyclone in the region is not expected to directly impact on the match but it is in the best interests of all involved to play the game as early as possible before the worst of the conditions occur,” NRL Chief Operating Officer, Graham Annesley, said.

“We will continue to monitor the situation with authorities to ensure all safety precautions are taken for players, officials and fans.”

Cowboys Executive Director Peter Parr added: “This decision is in the best interests of both teams, events staff and the general public.

“We would like to thank Penrith, the NRL, Stadium Management and particularly Fox Sports for the understanding and care they have shown in this situation.”

The Cowboys-Panthers match will be available live via viewers’ choice for Foxtel and Austar subscribers on Fox Sports 2 HD and Fox Sports 2.

The Toyota Cup match between the Cowboys and Panthers will now kick-off at 4.30pm.

Gates open at 4.15pm.
