Great Dragon comeback
Premierships may not be won in February, however the Catalan Dragons are definitely living up to their title as the ‘darkhorses’ of the 2012 Super League season, recording a thrilling 34-32 victory over St Helens at Langtree Park last Friday.
The win sees the Dragons remain the only undefeated team left in the competition, as the Perpignan-based club highlighted their attacking prowess, coming from 26-8 down to clinch the match in the final play through a try to Daryl Millard.
The successful conversion from former Newcastle Knight Scott Dureau after full-time ensured the visitors would take home the two competition points.
Holdsworth kicks Salford to victory
Former Bulldog Daniel Holdsworth kicked his team to victory in the other Friday night clash which saw the Salford City Reds record back to back wins.
In what was their first win at their new home ground, the Reds started in impressive fashion, securing a double through winger Ashley Gibson to lead 10-0 before Hull FC hit back with tries via Brett Seymour (2) and Wade McKinnon to take a half-time lead.
Hull extended their lead when Tom Briscoe crossed early in the second half before the Reds finished strongly with tries to Matty Ashurst and Sean Gleeson to lock up the match at 22-all. Holdsworth then slotted the winning penalty just two minutes from full-time.
Bradford bounce back
A hat-trick to 22-year-old second rower Elliott Whitehead has helped Bradford rebound from their 10-try mauling at the hands of Wigan last week to gain a convincing 36-18 victory over the Wakefield-Trinity Wildcats on Saturday.
In just his third game back from suspension, Whitehead collected his first try off an intercept just before half-time to give the Bulls the lead, before completing his treble in a second half where the visitors ran riot.
Brett Kearney (two) and Keith Lulia joined Whitehead in crossing the white line for the Bulls, whilst former Panther Jarrod Sammut showed his skills with the boot, converting all six goals.
Broncos still chasing first victory
Despite a heavy recruitment drive in the off-season, the London Broncos are still chasing their first win of the 2012 Super League, going down to the Huddersfield Giants 30-16 over the weekend.
Danny Brough starred for the Giants, crossing for one try and setting up two others to help lead the visitors to their third win of the season.
Warrington hold off KR
The Warrington Wolves have retained top spot on the Stobart Super League ladder after recording a 42-10 victory over Hull KR on Sunday afternoon.
After racing out to an 18-0 lead, KR staged a comeback early in the second half through Rhys Lovegrove and Craig Hall to be within eight points of the home side, before Warrington proceeded to run away with the match.
Tomkins marks 100th cap in style
Sam Tomkins has celebrated his 100th match for the Wigan Warriors in impressive fashion, scoring a hat-trick to help his side crush the Castleford Tigers 46-4.
Castleford were never in the game, with Wigan crossing twice in just the opening eight minutes of the clash, with Tomkins and Pat Richards (two tries, seven goals), dominating against the emotionally drained Tigers.
The Tigers will have to refocus before they take on World Club Challenge winners the Leeds Rhinos next week, still without head coach Ian Millward who is on compassionate leave following the sudden death of his 19-year-old son Robbie.
Widnes winless...
The return to top level rugby league hasn’t been easy for the Widnes Vikings, with the competition newcomers again on the receiving end of another comprehensive defeat - this time at the hands of the Leeds Rhinos.
Widnes lacked the talent to capitalise on the Rhinos' mistakes in front of another passionate home crowd, with the visitors securing a 44-16 victory.
Watts out for six
If another loss wasn’t bad enough for the Vikings over the weekend, the news that they’ll now be without halfback/hooker Anthony Watts for at least six months has only rubbed salt into the wounds.
The 25-year-old former Cowboy tore his right anterior cruciate ligament in his debut match the previous round against Salford. The extent of the injury will mean Watts will have to undergo surgery and is unlikely to be back before late August.
Watts is the second Widnes player to be ruled out for six months after forward Ben Kavanagh ruptured an Achilles tendon in the same match.
Flannery to call it quits:
St Helens backrower Chris Flannery has announced that the 2012 Super League season will be his last.
The former Sydney Rooster and Queensland forward joined the Saints back in 2007, and whilst featuring in four Super League deciders for the club, he has yet to win a premiership in England.
Flannery announced his plans to return to Australia leading into St Helens' clash against the Catalan Dragons last Friday.
