It was a spirited showing by the visitors, who were forced to overcome an 8-3 penalty count against them in the first half but still managed to go to the break ahead 2-0. It was just the 12th time in 578 games that Newcastle had managed to keep their opponents scoreless and the first time they had ever done so away from home.
