Rugby League identities including Steve and Peter Mortimer, Andrew Ryan and Anthony Cherrington, joined with Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC CVO, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia over the weekend to provide flood relief to the Wagga Wagga community.
The Australian Rugby League Commission’s Flood Relief group, co-ordinated by the CRL and NRL, visited SES sites before helping host a barbecue lunch on Saturday for SES workers and the local community, that was also attended by the Governor-General.
During the lunch, NRL Player Education and Welfare Officer and One Community Ambassador Andrew Ryan presented a cheque to the Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga, Cr Kerry Pascoe for the Wagga Wagga Mayoral Flood Relief Appeal.
Country Rugby League Chief Executive Officer Mr Terry Quinn also presented a cheque to the Gundagai Rugby League Club, which was devastated by the floods. A variety of jerseys were donated for fundraising to the local SES organisation and the Gundagai Rugby League Club, which also received and Telstra Assistance Fund Packs (equipment).
Recently retired NRL journeyman Adam Peek and Bulldogs newcomer James Gavet were part of the Flood Relief Group from Sydney which visited SES sites at The Rock, Gundagai and North Wagga Wagga during the day; while Wests Tigers NRL stars Tim Moltzen and Blake Ayshford and 20s coach Todd Payten arrived later in the day for the Reconciliation Cup activities.
