While many clubs have already celebrated the Close the Gap round, a number of teams including the St George Illawarra Dragons are rolling out their Indigenous-inspired kits this weekend.
Five-eighth Jamie Soward will return to the Dragons' starting line-up this weekend against the Cowboys, joining his teammates in wearing the specially designed Dragons jersey as well as customised boots.
NRL Daily reporter Melinda Farrell caught up with Jamie at the Myimbarr learning centre on the South Coast where he helps encourage indigenous children to excel at school.
“It’s a great jumper,” said Soward. “Hopefully we get to keep one of them and auction the other off.
“I’m looking forward to Monday. Any time you get to play Johnathan Thurston its exciting for me.”
Soward, who believes he has been an easy target in the media lately, says it is great to be back in the number six jersey but would not be concerned if he had to again start from the bench.
“If that had of been the plan to come off the bench again this week I still would have been happy to be in the first grade... you can’t play everyone every week.”
Soward and the Dragons take on the fifth-placed North Queensland Cowboys at WIN Stadium on Monday night to finish off Round 24.
The Dragons, who has lost their last two matches and currently sit four points out of the top eight, must win to keep their very slim finals hopes alive.
