The late Arthur Beetson has been named the twelfth Queensland Sport Hall of Fame Legend while Australian Rugby League Commission Chairman, Mr John Grant, has been named the OAMPS Insurance Brokers Queensland Sport Administrator of the Year at Thursday's Queensland Sport Awards..
The 18th annual awards presentation at the Plaza Ballroom in Brisbane's Convention and Exhibition Centre attracted 700 guests, including a stunning array of champions from the Queensland Sport Hall of Fame.
Former Queensland captain and Test star of the 1920s, the late Jim Craig, was also added to the Hall of Fame.
Mr Grant, who was unable to attend the night because of a commitment to collective bargaining discussions in Sydney, said he was delighted to see Rugby League recognised as such an important part of Queensland sport.
“From a personal perspective it is a huge honour and one that I accept very humbly.
“I see this as being representative of the efforts of many people and I am delighted to accept it on their behalf and to also see the memory of players like Arthur and Jim recognized as part of Queensland sporting history is richly deserved and reflects much about the game.
“Rugby League has some fantastic opportunities ahead and tonight is in some way a recognition of the direction in which it is heading.
“On behalf of Rugby League I would like to also congratulate all the other athletes and sports recognised this evening.”
Olympic gold medallist Sally Pearson was named Queensland Athlete of the Year while Australia's 4x100 women's medley relay team edged out the all-conquering Maroons Rugby League team to win the title of Queensland Team of the Year award.
