The National Rugby League supports Federal Government moves to prevent the promotion of ‘live betting odds’ and other gambling advertising during match telecasts.

“The overwhelming sentiment is that we do not want to see betting as the primary focus of our game,” NRL Chief Executive, Mr Dave Smith, said today.

“Fans, and particularly young fans, should not be subject to excessive promotion of betting during matches.

“We want young kids to be enjoying the skills of their favourite team, not quoting the odds.”

The Australian Rugby League Commission has already announced that it is reviewing its position in relation to corporate partnerships with betting operators.

The NRL does not currently have a major partnership in this area and has no immediate plans to pursue further proposals.

“I think we all accept that sports betting is a reality and that it can provide a lot of enjoyment in the right circumstances,” Mr Smith said.

“It is about finding the proper balance and today’s announcement by the government is an important step in that direction.”
