Luke Lewis's World Cup campaign could be over after he dislocated his shoulder in an ugly incident in Australia's win over Fiji.

Lewis collided with an advertising hoarding beyond the dead-ball line while trying to score in the second half.

Lewis' shoulder was dislocated and it took several minutes for medical staff to put it back into place.

While Lewis is hopeful that scans tomorrow will produce a positive result, both captain Cameron Smith and Coach Tim Sheens conceded that his World Cup campaign could be over.

"It is really unfortunate for Lewis, but it looks like his World Cup is over," Smith told NRL.com.

"He is a great player and a great bloke and you never like seeing things like that happen.

"It would be a big loss to the team, but it means one of the younger players is going to have to step up.

"Both Josh Papalii and Boyd [Cordner] played really well tonight, it's just a shame to see him get hurt."

Lewis couldn't remember the incident when asked about it in the sheds at fulltime.

"To be honest, I don't really know what happened," he said.

"I don't think I've ever been in so much pain on the footy field. I was gone until they brought out the gas to numb the pain. Thankfully it has been put back in and you never know.

"Hopefully the scans tomorrow come up good and I'll be able to play again."
